“Who am I” is the first track in Namibian Rapper Jericho’ most recent album “The Recovery”. As someone who was unfamiliar with Jericho’s previous work, this song was the perfect introduction to him. As the album title, “The Recovery”, implies, this is Jericho’s return to music after a long battle with depression. Prior to the release of this album Jericho had taken a four-year break from music. During this Hiatus, Jericho converted to Christianity and abandoned his old way of life. In “Who am I” Jericho introduces this new version of himself, both to fans who were awaiting his return and to new listeners such as myself. The beat is simple, so as not to pull focus away from his words. Throughout the song he says that he used to be rash and too quick to jump into fights. He also makes heavy reference to overcoming addiction, both to substance and to money. He raps about the friends and opportunities that he lost to drugs and alcohol. The most prevalent theme in the song is his new connection to God. Even ending the song by saying “thank you lord for all the blessings, made a man out of me”. I found the song both to be both authentic and enjoyable. Jericho’s flow and tone perfectly complement the simple but good beat, and the topic of overcoming past vices to become a better person is one that anyone can understand and empathize with. Overall I would say that “Who am I” was an excellent way to return to music after his break.
