Academic Journals

Global Hip Hop Studies (GHHS) is a peer-reviewed, rigorous and community-responsive academic journal that publishes research on contemporary as well as historical issues and debates surrounding hip hop music and culture around the world, twice annually. The journal provides a platform for the investigation and critical analysis of hip hop politics, activism, education, media practices and industry analyses as well as manifestations of hip hop culture in all four of the classic elements (DJing/turntablism, MCing/rapping, graffiti/street art and b-boying/b-girling/breaking and other hip hop dances), the under-examined realms of beatboxing, fashion, identity formation, hip hop nation language (HHNL) and beyond.

The Journal of Hip-Hop and Education (JHHE) is a double-blind peer-reviewed academic publication dedicated to exploring the dynamic intersection of hip-hop culture and educational practice. Its primary goal is to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of how hip-hop, as a rich and multifaceted cultural movement, influences and shapes educational methodologies, pedagogy and instruction, curriculum development, and school culture and communities across diverse learning environments globally. Published bi-annually, this journal will offer a platform for rigorous scholarly inquiry and critical analysis, focusing on the integration of hip-hop culture and sensibilities across and within educational settings.

The Journal of Hip Hop Studies (JHHS) is a peer-reviewed journal published annually. JHHS publishes critically engaged, culturally relevant, rigorously researched, and astute analyses of Hip Hop. The journal positions itself within Hip Hop culture and the Black freedom struggle. JHHS’ role in the culture is to provide an opportunity for those who are both academic and Hip Hop to have a voice in academia. JHHS’ cultural immersion ensures better scholarship. At the same time, Hip Hop has always provided a voice for the voiceless. JHHS’ recognition of Hip Hop’s liberatory actions leads the journal to focus on publishing scholarship that speaks truth to power and challenges the cultural hegemony being propagated by White Supremacy. Moreover, in light of the oppression that Black and Brown scholars endure in academia, JHHS provides a space for them to achieve tenure through publishing and a platform to speak out against the injustices they experience. JHHS primarily publishes essays, poems, short stories, and book reviews that are grounded in and intersect with the field of Hip Hop studies.
