All “Anger” Ain’t Bad!
For all of you who don’t know her, Nigerian-English rapper Laura Adegbite (aka “Shaybo”) is known for her February 25, 2020 hit single “Anger.” Nicknamed “The Queen of the South,” her song “Anger” tells a story. Shaybo was born on October 5, 1996. The 25-year-old rapper’s origin is Nigerian, and her ethnic group is Yoruba, in which she is a member of an African people of Southwestern Nigeria and Benin.
From boarding school to secondary school to high school, she spent her early years and her free time free-styling with music with her friends – even being in a music group at the age of 14. Music has always been her first love and rapping has always been her delight! Like any mother, however, rapping wasn’t good enough for her daughter, who urged her to go to college and get a degree that she earned in social work.
Freestyle or Social Work?
It wasn’t long before Shaybo realized that social work wasn’t her thing, and that rapping was. With influences such as American rapper Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, and Nicki Minaj, she saw that women can do it. She said that there’s a world full of angry women! These women need empowerment! They get power from the lyrics in her song. Her song “Anger” is an inspiration for women all around the world. Shaybo draws from her life experiences and articulates her feelings through her rap.
“Anger” tells the story of hers and many other women’s lives. She used to be a delinquent, she used to get into lots of fights, as she felt misunderstood. The only way she felt she could express herself was through her rap. Shaybo stands true to her Nigerian roots which she proudly expresses through her music. She started to become recognized for her music with her unique voice and contribution in the UK, including several music nominations.
COVID-19 Affects Nigeria
At the peak of her career, COVID-19 took the world by storm. With the lockdowns in place, adjustments were made in the music and entertainment worlds, which resulted in different ways to make music and money. No one was going to concerts or making movies and music. Social media became as Forest Gump says, “My best new friend.”
In her song “Anger,” it is evident that Shaybo is comfortable with herself as well as with overcoming her pain and traumatic experiences that made her a strong woman. She knows how to sit among the best men and still get her point across – with confidence, but without anger!
