In her single “Blue Print”, Rosa Ree sends the beautiful message that Black people are the blueprint.
In Western media and education, Black history is conceptualized through stories of slavery and colonialism worldwide. Rarely are there mainstream outlets for us to learn about our history and divine connection to Africa, the Motherland. In her single, “Blue Print”, Rosa Ree speaks to the royal nature of Blackness.
Through “Blue Print” lyrics and video, Rosa Ree tells the story of colonists violating Africans after being welcomed into their homeland. She speaks of “you locked our women up in cages just to see their bodies” which is conscious of the acts of colonialists who kidnapped women from Africa and displayed them in cages on the streets of Europe. This line is visually reinforced with popular sketches of Europeans at the time of what such inhumanity looked like.
Rosa Ree identifies colonialism as the root cause of the disconnection of a people from their roots. Key lines include, “Delete our history so our children wouldn’t know their power,” and “wish I could deliver this message in my own mother’s language”. Ultimately, Rosa Ree highlights the falsehood and narrow viewpoints of the stories told to shape a new narrative.
With pride, Rosa Ree empowers the Black listener, singing “All the children of my forefathers, this is your birthright”. The Black listener is called to take back all the riches they deserve. She even highlights skin tone, the main trait the world uses against Black people, by saying “Even though they call us dark, our skin is evidence of royalty”. Shots of Rosa Ree and Black youth clad in traditional clothing emphasize the sheer beauty of our culture.
This song and video combine themes of Black consciousness, slavery, and Africana. Wake up, take back what belongs to you, and stream “Blue Print” by Rosa Ree now!
