As a first-generation Nigerian-American, I can assure you that the majority of us were strictly encouraged to become doctors, lawyers, or engineers. With healthy ambition and a lot of self-confidence, many of us took chances on ourselves to create lives of our own. Through all of our creative mediums, we represent the Diaspora in ways unique to us as we create new legacies for our families in the United States.
June is an artist who is next up! Identifying as a first-generation Nigerian-American, she makes herself a key player on the scene by being the representation queer Nigerian artists need to be visible. In Nigeria, homosexuality is criminalized, depleting the opportunity for queer creatives in Nigeria to obtain a platform and popularity for their craft. For the Nigerian Diaspora, June is key for queer representation.
June is inspired to be her most authentic self because she is aware of the great opportunity to succeed as an artist here in the United States. She represents the Diaspora just by being. Her music tells stories about her truth and listeners have the opportunity to feel her gratitude and pure excitement for life in her lyrics and alternative hip-hop beats. The feel-good alternative hip-hop beat and catchy lyrics will have you dancing to her music too.
What are you waiting for? Watch her latest music video, “Can’t Come Down” which follows June as she meets her next fling for the first time at a club inside of a house party.
