Jovi is an anglophone rapper and producer from Cameroon. He is the first anglophone rapper to come out of the North West region of the country. In an interview with Fader, Jovi tells the story of how he makes what he can with what he has. He can always find a cheaper version of the equipment that is considered industry standard in America. Jovi blends sounds from many regions in Africa and Cameroon’s popular genre Makossa.
In 2023, Jovi released his latest album ‘2035’. This album delivers a wide array of rhythms, moods, and characteristics in one setting. Kobra Since 1998 is the first song on the album. It features a heavy but groovy bass that compliments the chorus. The beat is very simplistic, piano, horns, and percussion. Many sounds on this song were sampled to blend into something cohesive. Jovi glides across the beat with this uplifting lyrics. There are very clear and strong gospel influences that can be heard in Jovi’s music. This is no different. The song displays Jovi’s skills as a writer and producer.
The lyrics of the song sound like a testimony of triumph wherever Jovi is coming from. Jovi is humbly using bravado to let the audience know who he is and that he’s a winner. He can brag because he knows that life is free and the key is gratitude. This strong message can be inspirational for so many people.
Jovi is not interested in creating a sound that will be mistaken for anyone else. He will even go as far as not releasing tracks that could bring him further visibility for his career. He is not in the music business for that at all. Jovi uses every chance he gets to create and recreate his sounds and flow.
