Dizzy DROS, or DROS (‘Da Rhymes of Streets’), is a Moroccan rapper, songwriter, and producer. He made his debut in 2011 after the release of his music video, Cazafonia. DROS began rapping at 17, and his song “Yasuke” from his EP Tall Boy Syndrome showcases his long-lasting commitment to authenticity.
Now, I don’t speak Arabic, but Google Translate comes a long way. His song “Yasuke”, named after an African Samurai, tells his story as a rapper in the scene and calls out artists who lack substance. Coming from a rough background, he is committed to success. He raps that regardless of who challenges him, he’ll stay ahead. DROS proves he is not a force to be reckoned with and isn’t bothered by the haters.
In this song, Yasuke is utilized as a metaphor. The samurai, powerful and resilient, represents DROS. No matter the hardships, he will persevere and become successful because he remains true to himself. At the end of the song, he shows love for Morocco by shouting out different places, one being his hometown, Casablanca.
What drew me to the song is his voice. At first, the beat starts off with the keys, then gradually moves into a mix of keys with a drum pattern. These elements, when mixed together, make a catchy beat that I can nod my head to. The simplicity and repetition of the beat allow his voice to shine through. Even the raspiness of his voice and his strong tone allow me to feel his determination. Through the combination of the beat, lyrics, and his voice, DROS portrays his resolve.
Overall, I enjoyed “Yasuke”. It is clear that DROS’ commitment to authenticity is one of the defining qualities of his craft. Whether or not you can resonate with the message, “Yasuke” is a song that will continue to be played throughout the region and beyond.
