When we talk about the depiction of African women in the Hip Hop scene, there are certain artists who don’t add much to the notion of uplifting said women. Some women artists actually take away from that, then there’s those who neither add nor take away. When it comes to artists who are labeled “socially conscious”, they need to shed light on the issues that are currently affecting their community. Although, that’s not always the case. MC Caro is a “masculine” presenting woman, a combination that’s not very prominent amongst African women in the Hip Hop industry, and I’m sure that’s part of the reason why she has such a huge following. She challenges the norm and does her own thing! MC Caro is capable of putting out bangers, but “We Inside” isn’t the anthemic “all call” for female empowerment that some conscious rap consumers may be looking for. Released on March 21, 2023, the video has some cute, visually appealing shots throughout its duration, and even includes some dancing that is extremely American influenced. But, the lyrics are lacking. Every time MC Caro says, “we inside”, it sounds rushed and doesn’t come across the way it should, plus the majority of the song includes her making up for her lyrics with mindless ad-libs. There is a good majority of the song that is not English but for the parts that are, we mainly hear MC Caro talk trash on someone’s “boyfriend” and talk about “fire on the ganja”. To bring back what I mentioned before, this is a song that neither adds or takes away from the unspoken female upliftment movement. Nothing about the song screams “political/female anthem”, it’s just another song that got over 23k views for being “catchy”. If you want a song to give support to the bettering of the image of African women in Hip Hop, this song is not it.
