Glory by Nyashinski is a powerful tune that tackles the need to embody your true self head-on. In his first verse he comes in with a strong line, Usi-confuse ile ujuaji nakuona nayo na confidence, “Kama usha-change na unapewa lift, sijui utakuwa nani uki-buy ki-Benz” (Translation) “Don’t confuse knowing what you see with confidence, If you change and you are given a lift, I don’t know who you will be if you buy a Benz”. It is a widespread trend in our generation to curate an image to impress others. It’s easy to believe that a flashy lifestyle and image equates to confidence, but Nyashinki debunks that in this song.
Despite his fame, the artist is known for his down-to-earth image. The world of social media is the main catalyst for this, it all revolves around putting an outward image for others to receive. In Glory, he makes it known that he limits his time spent engaging on social media apps, “Take over game bila cosign, most of my day niko offline, Na-live life wana-rap (Yeah), FYI, sina WhatsApp, but kuna wi-fi na kuna bag so” (Translation) “Take over game without cosign, most of my day I am offline, Na-live life they rap (Yeah), FYI, I don’t have WhatsApp, but there is wi-fi and there is bag so”. There is a lot of pressure to conform in the hip-hop culture, but Nyashinski isn’t afraid to be upfront with how he doesn’t participate in what he’s expected “to be”.
He tells more about how he’s never touched cocaine or unsafe ways to administer drugs. While embarking on his new journey of being a solo artist, he has stayed true to his values. This song speaks to those who feel the pressures of society to conform. As in Nyashinski’s words, “Mnaogopa kukuwa irrelevant, hiyo mi nishaji-train” (Translation) “You are afraid of being irrelevant, that’s a train-train”. I think we can all learn a lesson that sticking to who you are at your core is the most valuable thing you can have.
