Stigity, the Liberian-American artist, has gained prominence not only in his country of origin but in the United States as well. His songs that convey stories of his come-up, his struggles, and his current standing have been heard by voices all over the world.
Stigity was born in Harlem and raised in the South Bronx, but his family is of Liberian origin. Stigity started out as a photographer, snapping photos of Asap Mob, Tinashe, Fred the God Son, etc. Growing up in the hood, the only way to come up is to have multiple flows of income. Being multifaceted is a gift and a highly recognized skill. Growing up in the Bronx, he saw gang violence run rampant, yet gained a sense of community from building connections with the people on his block, although sometimes the bad can outweigh the good. To cope with his depression, he swapped his camera for a microphone, which led to the release of his first mixtape “Original Uptown Hippy”, and from there he only went up.
On June 21, 2021, Stigity released his song called “Politics”, which was filmed in Liberia. Within his lyrics, he highlights how he was “whippin’ in the trap house” as a kid and now as an adult, he sees that the economy and community is falling, yet “you [gotta] get back up until you get it right”. Two of my favorite lines in the song are “Don’t try to come back here and politic, unless you bringin’ back a scholarship” and “Cause n***** tired escaping the madness, the civil war was tragic”. It shows how Stigity doesn’t just want economic improvement, but educational improvement, and that he’s aware that the struggles of the Liberian people aren’t a newfound thing, but instead something that’s been occurring for decades, yet we know it’s been much longer than that. The visuals of the video show Liberian men, women, and children working in the streets trying to make a way and survive. There’s even a shot of Stigity with a little boy drinking water from a pouch. The overall theme of the video is to show Liberian life, both through the intense labor and the culture. I recommend giving this one a listen, because Stigity “[reads his] facts”.
