D-Jay’s “Squad Anthem” leans towards the calmer side of hip-hop that is often less talked about in modern discussion, but despite the calm tone the song does not lack passion. The backing track is a simple beat with an elegant piano melody, which is always a solid choice. Any time an MC makes effective use of the piano in their track the song goes up in rating (at least for me). The calm track matches the lyrics and tone of the song perfectly. Even though the song is called “Squad Anthem” D-Jay speaks about his entire community. He talks about how the people around him held him up and supported him as he dealt with his own problems. Through this song he speaks about what he is now willing to do for the community and family that supported, how those people are what motivated him to move forward in his life and in his career. In this way the song can be interpreted as a love letter to his community. As someone who has listened to a lot of modern hip-hop, the instinct to respect a rapper who remembers where and who they came from is hard wired into me. The music video is also a good match for the song and its content. D-Jay avoids the common trend of displaying wealth or sex in music videos and instead the focus of the video is the community and its people. The message of the song is enhanced by the footage of him and his squad hanging out and enjoying themselves. Overall “Squad Anthem” is a simple but very effective track, perfect to play while chilling out.
