South African rapper, singer, and songwriter Shane Eagle has become a prominent figure in the SA music scene. Born Shane Patrick Hughes in 1996 in Johannesburg, Eagle first gained recognition in 2015 when he finished in the Top 5 of the Vuzu: The Hustle, a South African hip-hop reality show. His latest release “Hold You” reflects his talents and ability to blend genres and deliver introspective lyrics.
The track delivers a message to a love interest in the form of a story. A special lady who is featured in the video seems to capture his heart but Eagle is in a bind as his career is taking off, touring, studio time, and chasing his dreams is making it harder to spend that time with his loved one, this is indicated in bars such as:
“Used to ride ’round the hood dreamin’ of whips like this
Now I’m hoppin’ out this s–t, would you believe this?
Nothing’s out of reach but you can’t have everythin’, mmm
Said, nothing’s out of reach but you can’t have everythin’”
Shot in Dublin, Ireland the video transitions between black and white and color film styles and follows Eagle around the city as he showcases an artist’s life: driving in fancy cars, shopping at record stores, filming, and making time for his love interest.
Overall, the record speaks to the sacrifices of dream chasing. The use of melodic piano beats is calming but the message is clear. No matter what you want to accomplish, you must be content that everything and everyone may not be able to come with you.
On the heels of a tour with J.Cole’s Dreamville, the launch of a few fashion ventures, and this latest visual, Eagle’s career continues to look promising and I’m sure his fans cannot wait to see what is next.
