A young man standing in front of tall bamboo plants, wearing a light-colored shirt and a beaded necklace, with a serious expression.

Today I will be reviewing the incredibly underrated track “ON MY OWN” by ZRi., featuring 21 Oranges and saveHXPE. Released on the moving album THANK GOD FOR THE SUN, the song centers on themes of empowerment discovered within one’s own solitude. It reflects on a romantic relationship that has reached its end, where the artist explores the lingering pain of loss and the realization that he was unable to care for his partner in the way he should have. The lyrics suggest that both individuals should be on their own, not out of a sense of loneliness, but as a deliberate and healthy choice to pursue their individual growth.

This song also masterfully explores the concept of emotional maturity. The artists explain a desire to simply keep the peace, intentionally refraining from letting the situation evolve into an explosive argument. The level of restraint provides a calming atmosphere for the track and encourages a sense of acceptance following a difficult breakup.

Along with these deep themes, the technical styles used really underscore the emotional weight of the track. The song opens with a chill and melodic vibe, introducing soothing harmonies. The female vocals at the beginning are very much contemporary R&B-influenced. Blending it with the traditional hip hop techniques, it makes the song very enjoyable to listen to. Additionally, saveHXPE’s feature provides a nice contrast to the light, airy vocals of 21 Oranges. While still maintaining the track’s mellow energy, saveHXPE’s baritone-heavy verse anchors the song’s vibe.

ZRi.’s production is the glue that really ties in all of these elements, utilizing a melodic beat to carry out the peaceful message. Beyond this individual track, the song acts as a chapter in the broader narrative of the THANK GOD FOR THE SUN project. It offers a moment of clarity following the more emotionally turbulent songs that appear earlier in the tracklist. It is evident that ZRi. designed this album to tell a cohesive story, effectively continuing the legacy of hip hop as a storytelling genre. The comprehensive, vibey exploration of maturity is a great hidden gem that really deserves more recognition and respect.
