Little Simz is a HipHop artist from the U.K.. Although she is from the United Kingdom, she still shows her culture and has her music attached to the Diaspora. There are examples in the music video ” Point and Kill”. The opening of the video they are in a village and they are passing by different groups of people on a motorbike. These different groups included “the aunties” in traditional clothing and a spiritual ceremony, which are some components of African culture. When I have listened to this song and other songs of Little Simz the flow and rap usually has a simple type of beat by a drum and or wooden instruments for her to rap over. Drums are one of the many instruments used/ practiced in African music and rhythms. She also does not wear traditional clothes, but instead jeans with a blouse and some pearls. I have also noticed that in Little Simz videos she has a variety of hairstyles that are influenced by those in Africa. The scene where everyone is dancing seems like it shows the country where she is from (the United Kingdom) especially when disco was big. The clothes and the hair, with the smoke in the air, gave the impression of the ’70s. I like that the patterns that are shown in traditional clothing were used for the more modern outfits in the video. Even though that scene seems more from the U.K. she still had one of the aunties showering her with money as she danced, which is another custom in some parts of Africa. Her videos have great representation because they always have people of color in them, and I love that! Little Simz does an amazing job of having a balance between her country and the Diaspora with not only her words but also the visuals.
