“Piece for Peace” was written and wonderfully delivered by Priddy Ugly a South African hip-hop artist. This music video not only resonates with audiences due to its impactful message but also because of its intense imagery.

The video depicts the traumas that oppress South African communities. Very quickly in the video, the camera pans to a young lady being shot on the street as she pleads on her knees for mercy. As these visuals take place Priddy Ugly raps: “Older sister took a gun to the chest, it punctured her lung through her flesh. For her phone almost plunged to her death. Real life not a stunt on the net, ooh.”

Crime like this does not present to be an anomaly. Later in the video viewers watch as an abusive couple quarrel in their apartment during which Priddy Ugly raps: “Mama didn’t think that he would rape her ‘til her pants left her
Left her covered up in blood is how that man dressed her.”

Referencing the devastation that the South African Government has brought across the nation Pridy Ugly finishes the song with a powerful one-liner: “They oppressed us in the past, we demand better
I hope you know that in the future we’ll be ancestors”

Priddy Ugly’s lyricism is unmatched and his ability to evoke emotions out of listeners is to be studied. Through this music video I as a viewer could empathize with the experiences expressed. “Piece For Peace” is just one of the many songs of his that speaks to the social and political climate of the world around him. While many hip-hop artists of this day and age focus on superficial aspects of life, he consistently takes his music a step further. Making it a priority to address necessary harsh truths. This admirable trait about him will continue to set him apart from the rest!
