Na, na, na, K’naan!

by Branford Bland – Song: Wavin’ Flag by K’naan

K’naan turning up with the people.

Artist: Keinan Abdi Warsame, better known as K’naan, is Somali/Canadian artist and rapper. K’naan quickly rose to international prominence after his single, “Wavin’ Flag” was selected to be Coca-Cola’s promotional anthem for the 2010 World Cup.

Lyrics: It makes sense why Coca-cola chose this song as the Promotional anthem for the World cup after analyzing the lyrics. Phrases like the referencing “the beautiful game” demonstrate a tie to soccer and during the world cup there is definitely a hike in nationalism since the essence of the tournament is two countries competing in a soccer match.

Graphics: The graphics displayed throughout the music video reinforced the theme and essence of soccer. The video depicts a group of boys playing soccer in different spots and executing different tricks and skill moves.

Impressions: This was a song that I didn’t know that I knew, but when I played it there was something familiar about the beat and rhythm. Upon further research of the song, I discovered the fact that this was Coca-Cola’s promotional anthem for the 2010 World Cup, and I realized that I had probably come across the song earlier during the tournament. Ultimately, I am a fan of the song. I like the ties to soccer. I like the message to represent your country proudly. And I like the beat and energy that K’naan gives.
