Caroline Moore, also known as MC Caro, is one of Liberia’s leading faces of hip-hop. She was born in 1996 and gained traction in the Liberian hip-hop industry through her freestyle “Pro Poor”. As one of the only prominent Liberian female rappers in the industry, she has made a name for herself through her dedication to exposing social and political issues in her country and calling for national unity. In the official visualizer for her 2023 song “WIN,” she employs one of her main strategies to relay her message: including large groups of Liberian people as a representation of community. This is seen across her music videos throughout the years. She gathers crowds to celebrate with her throughout the video, specifically placing young women at the forefront of the line of young Liberians behind her.
MC Caro’s “WIN” music video displays various representations of Liberian women, including a scene of a woman hanging traditional clothes to dry, which can be seen as an ode to culture and tradition. This is no surprise, as MC Caro has proudly revealed her African roots to the world on multiple occasions. From MC Caro confidently delivering her verses to women engaging in activities traditionally associated with masculinity such as sports and competition, the video portrays women’s individuality and counters traditional views of women in contemporary hip-hop culture. MC Caro’s style does not embody the idea of a typical female rapper in hip hop culture, as she leans more toward what would be considered “masculine” dress, defying stereotypes and breaking gender barriers in hip hop culture. Caro’s videos typically counter hypermasculinity and hegemonic masculinity in hip hop, through her role in these videos, as well as how she places other women in them.
