I have to start off by saying the visual for this song, Betoile by OBOY is amazing. étoile in English means star like there is a star in the sky guiding him. It starts off with an image of this glowing light in a mass of space and then we see OBOY standing on a sand dune with the wind blowing and this glowing light above his head. The coloring is interesting as well, he looks like a sort of alien and throughout the video, we can see this light guiding him and moving about this world. It’s a beautiful visual and a beautiful song that has a soft mellow tone with a beautiful melodic beat. The pre-chorus in this song can be translated to “Eyes towards the sky, I feel like I can see you, I’m going crazy Down here, life is crazy, back then it was jail, now it’s the concert stage”. Without knowing too much of what exactly this means in the context of OBOY’s life I know that this is definitely speaking to the duality of life and how far he’s come from a life destined for prison, it also speaks to OBOY’s mental state. I think this song may be a song about mental health and even suicide, OBOY says in his lyrics: “If you ask me: “What’s the matter ?”, I’ll answer “everything is béné”, right now, I’m thinking about leaving”. This is a very introspective and vulnerable song from OBOY, he talks about using alcohol and drugs, he is trying to cover up a wound for someone that he’s lost while he has to still go on. This song coupled with the visual is so very effective, I feel what OBOY is saying deeply and I can feel the pain and the loneliness he expresses through his music. I am officially an OBOY fan.
