Africa is the future of hip-hop. It’s 54 African nations. Not only are they spitting like crazy, but they’re also braiding languages. Hip-hop is going to like 3.0 when you talk about Africa. Hip-hop is there. So that’s the sustaining power if you want to pay attention to it. – Chuck D

Lady Skeet : Liberia’s Best Female Rap Artist?

on

Liberian rap artist Lady Skeet, formally known as Skeeter Roberts, was born in Brewersville, Montserrado County in 1990.

Having been involved with the choir since the age of three, Lady Skeet found a passion in music at a very young age. By the age of 10 she began writing and making music as well as writing movie scripts. Growing up a tomboy, Lady Skeet looked up to American Hip – Hop artist “Missy Elliot” and believed strongly that her appearance and her preference should not affect how she was treated or respected. According to the Liberian entertainment website, Lady Skeet spoke about an incident in which she was once asked to leave a church because of her attire. After speaking with the pastor, she was never again asked to leave. “ whatever anyone does in particular, others are going to say negative or positive things about it. Things like negativity don’t really bother me, as it doesn’t affect me at all.”

In 2006 Lady Skeet was signed to LIB records and began taking the proper steps to further her career and become known as a female rap artist in Africa and beyond. She was rapping on shows and free-styling on demos up until 2007 when LIB records fell short as a result to moist of their artists branching off with means of expansion.  In 2012 she wrote and released her own single in 2012 which was called ”Bush Lover”featuring Mr. Smith and Lady Murphy. Lady Skeet says that “Bush Lover” talks about how we love Africa, and what we do in the bush, in Africa. We don’t go in the supermarket to buy fruits, we pick it, so the track talks about how we live and love in Africa.”

Being a female in the rap game in Africa has not been easy, for most aspiring female rap artists it is easy to be reliant on male figure in the game for promotion. However, with her uniqueness and what she describes as her smooth and fast way of rapping along with her passion for the art, she seeks to continue making music for people to feel and understand. ”The music that I’m doing is for us the Librarians, music that will push us out there tomorrow, because music is what carries a nation, look at Ghana and Nigeria, entertainment has helped them, I just want people to keep buying and listening to my songs” , stated Lady Skeet in an interview in 2013.
