Khaligraph Jones: Kenyan Hip-Hop artist to look out for

Khaligraph Jones was born June 12th, 1990 to the name of Brian Ouko Omollo and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. He is one of Kenya’s most-notable songwriters/rappers for his versatility in street rap with the inclusion of pop influences. Often referred to as ‘Papa Jones’, his career began in elementary school through his ability to tell stories about power, poverty, respect, and crime in his neighborhood of Kayole. Jones grew in popularity when he won the 2009 Channel O Emcee Africa talent competition. This national acknowledgment led to the release of his debut album, ‘Point of No Return’ in 2014.

‘Papa Jones’ musical career sky-rocketed due to his fresh and creative freestyles. The continuous broadcast of his music and guest features on other musicians’ songs led to international recognition and fame. The 2015 mixtape ‘Eff Off’ introduced his fans to new musical styles and this was the catalyst for the release of his second full-length studio album, entitled ‘Testimony 1990’. It served as a confessional to express his life, troubles, and challenges faced by fellow Kenyans and Kenya. He aimed to gain the attention of the community and government by releasing these testimonies. During this time, he emerged as one of Kenya’s most popular hip-hop artists, and he proceeded to release original material even as he empowered/inspired young up-and-coming talented individuals to establish a reputation for themselves within the entertainment industry.

Hip Hop icon, Khaligraph Jones discussed in an interview with BBC, how he for years never released an album but, only dropped mixtapes due to the negative opinions he received from people who were persistent in bringing him down and discouraging his dream of being a rapper. He reveals that he experienced depression and his determination, discipline, and principle to achieve success and prove the haters wrong fueled his prosperous career. Jones now stands as a role model and icon for future aspiring generations of musicians.
