Every artist has a moment when their music shifts from promising to something powerful. For Jemberu Demeke, that moment came when he released Esatu Se in 2024.
Born and raised in Ethiopia, Jemberu became a rapper, producer, and songwriter. Before his music hits, he graduated with a degree in software engineering from Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. He initially started writing English rap, experimenting with Western hip-hop styles.
Then he utilized his Ethiopian roots, where his authentic voice emerged. His signature style, which he calls “tonic fusion,” blends traditional Ethiopian scales with hip hop, trap, and reggaeton. It is modern and very much in the Ethiopian style. His debut EP in 2024 featured collaborations with legends like Mulatu Astak, who brought a generation, and now his song Esatu Se brings his listeners to a newer Ethiopian hip hop era.
Esatu Se (fire) is an album that fully leans into someone fiery. From the very first beat, the song is filled with rhythm that makes you sway or dance. The lines translated to English, “call the fire king, call the king fire/ the king and the gire merge as one.” It doesn’t flow as well in English, but it’s telling us to empower and unite ourselves because sometimes we as individuals are the ones who create divide within ourselvs whether that’s belittling or creating doubt in our minds. So we need to keep our chins up and continue the walk to power and strength to build the fire that drives us to push forward.
There is so much more meaning within the name itself. So, in Amharic, several letters look completely different but sound the same. For example, ሰ-se and ሠ both mean something else. First se is “the flameful se, and the second letter is for the king “se the king.”When questioned, he responded, “I am in a stage where I am brimming with energy, youthful passion, and the fiery spirit akin to the letter.”
He’s comparing the fire and the king, metaphorically speaking. This line compares the fire and the king, which stands for inner strength (the fire) and personal growth(people overcoming so many challenges and still reaching the top.
