Skepta is an MC from London whose parents immigrated to the United Kingdom from Nigeria eventually raising quite a creative family. All of Skepta’s siblings are urgently in music or art.

The song Gas Me Up is still cooling off, being released in 2024. Skepta is in conversation with perhaps an old friend or someone he is having a disagreement with.

The music video opens with scenes from New York City where the rapper gives a recap on how he has been “Every days a party”. Skepta has his friends, his private helicopter, and his car collection. Success is here for the rapper. Jokes about changes in his life are made “We don’t talk about beef”, proclaiming a “Top Boy season”. Skepta is doing pretty good and is happy with where they are now. Others believe Skepta is not the guy anymore as the verses continue “They hate when you become successful / But in the trenches we were all friends”.

Skepta has remained connected to his family’s hometown in Odo-Aje, Nigeria. Relatives and friends back home know him just as much as those he came up with in the UK.

Skepta was made a Chief in Odo-Aje in 2018. The community granted him the honorary title of “Chief Entertainer of Odd-Aje”. Linking his roots to not just London, but the place his parents and ancestors came from is vitally important. Young people who have grown up without idols that look like them or idols who embrace culture from the continent certainly can appreciate Skepta’s work.

Gas Me Up can be representative of the pride in his work because he knows what it took to get him where he is today. When a peer suggests that he has lost touch or is not the same, a deeper offense may be taken.
