Kao Denero has used music not only to express himself in his most authentic way but also as a way to bring light to social/political issues and to shed light on Sierra Leone. He has had many songs that talk about all aspects of life, some good and some bad. Doing what an artist is supposed to do. In 2020, a very life-changing time for almost everyone around the world Kao Denero released a song alongside a very famous Jamaican artist named Busy Signal called “Ghetto Struggle.” The song “Ghetto Struggle” is a song that acknowledges the poor social and economic climate everywhere. For those who don’t know the word ghetto in most places is used to describe “a poor urban area occupied by a minority group of groups.” It is understood that many people living in what’s considered the ghetto have been placed there and, therefore are only accessible to limited resources. This song does a good job of showing awareness to all the people, especially Black/African/Caribbean people.
Kao Denero expresses his advocacy for the people experiencing “Ghetto Struggle” by making lyrical statements saying “Before I leave this place ima be a don, fight the struggle like a rebel…” . He also makes references to the political aspects such as contacting the politician and still notices that “the system is devilish.” Through the verses and the chorus, the words are very carefully chosen to bring light to people in these conditions all around the world. This is why I was particularly pleased to see Kao Denero team up with Busy Signal to deliver this message.
Lastly, in addition to the clear depiction of “ghetto” life through lyrics, the video is a huge component that equally adds to the impact of this song. “Ghetto Struggle” is shot in Jamaica and I honestly think that was a smart choice because it unifies people of all parts of the world together. Although he is Sierra Leonean he captures what he sees in his home in Jamaica which is a strong observation worth sharing. Close and intimate scenes are captured when focusing on the people which add to the connection for the viewers. Throughout the video Kao and Busy Signal are in shots together just rapping which leaves room for the attention to be in them which in turn makes the listeners catch the lyrics.
Overall, with the attention to detail whether that is in the lyrical choice and/or scenery I can say the message was properly conveyed and was worth shedding light on.
