As I journey throughout my Hip Hop & Pop Culture of Africa class, I chose to indulge in Cameroonian Hip Hop. My first song of the journey is a song released on September 19, 2025, by AJ Bahboy. ‘Chacun A Son Look’ feat. André-Marie Tala. If we translate the French into English, it would mean “Everyone Has Their Own Look.” I don’t particularly know too much French, but just from what my ears can hear, this track is meant to be uplifting. It has a very ecstatic vibe, it’s extremely rhythmic, and it seems to blend different styles. The Afrobeat exudes a positive energy that even someone who could not speak any language at all could still dance and sway to. This seems to be the case for what Modern African hip-hop has been trying to refine as of late.

About The Artist
I can see that AJ Bahboy is a lot younger and brings that type of energy to the song. He is a contemporary hip-hop musician known for blending authentic Cameroonian flair with modern rap flow. His music typically explores themes of identity, personal strength, and a sense of community. All of these can be seen in “Chacun A Son Look.”

Song Breakdown & Theme
“Chacun A Son Look” is an anthem of being yourself. You are encouraged to celebrate your uniqueness. Not conforming to a single stereotype of a trend. Embrace your identity: fashion, attitude, culture, etc. Be who you are and have no shame in that. The feature from a more seasoned Andre-Marie Talla gives an additional melodic depth that balances lyrics and the accessibility factor.
Critical Points
To me, the most vocal point is how it merges cultural pride with contemporary sounds. Unlike a lot of mainstream hip-hop tracks that lean into more Western influences alone, Chacun A Son Look brings forward a distinct African hip-hop identity. That, to me, is why I am very glad this is an intro to my journey through more music like this. It is all about your story, your look, and speaking your voice without apology. This makes the track meaningful in its message. This perfect balance is what a lot of songs strive for, but typically don’t always reach.
