Cassper Nyovest, Refiloe Maele Phoolo, is a South African songwriter, rapper, entrepreneur, and record producer. He was born and raised in Mahikeng, North West. He’s also known to be one of the most successful artists in South Africa. In 2014, he established his own record label, Family Tree Records.
In 2004, Cassper formed a hip hop group, Childhood Gangsta, with his friends when they were 13. After establishing his own record label in 2014, Cassper released his debut album, Tsholofelo, named after his sister. With the success of Tsholofelo, Cassper released the platinum edition of the album with new songs with featured artists such as; Casey Veggies, DJ Drama, Wizkid and Anatii. In 2018, Cassper released his fourth album, Sweet and Short; This album was certified platinum on it’s release day. Just last year, Cassper founded a sneaker company Root of Fame, under Drip Footwear. Last year at The South African Hip Hop Awards he also won three awards, “Song of the Year”, “Album of the Year”, and “Best Male”.
Cassper dropped his Any Minute Now album in 2020. On that album, his most popular song is, Isinkwa (Visualizer) ft. PRO Kid. In this song Cassper talks about how people never seen his vision but he always had the right plan. The verse that stood out the most to me is when he said, “So I never have to work for a white man, I own every single piece of this license”(Cassper). I respect that he includes his trials and tribulations in his music. Another verse that I really like is, “Got a couple of things i lost, Like my mind kinda loco but it ain’t my fault”. I like this verse because I think he’s extremely unique and relatable. His music is catchy and his flow is effortless.
