Cassper Nyovest is a South African recording artist as well as a record producer. He has recently been getting larger in the industry, and shows a wide range of skills with his lyricism and ability to sing over a chorus. His song “Phumakim” has an upbeat tempo with an array of instruments. The video takes place in in multiple areas throughout South Africa. The video gives some insight into the culture by showing land with a lot of empty space, as well as the vast city life that is present in certain parts of Africa. The song portrays a lifestyle that many hPhumakimip hop artist strive to live. One that involves luxurious cars, females, and a group of friends as an entourage.
I can see a lot of western influence in his music style as well as content. From the start of the song he talks about getting money what is often a topic for this style of music. He uses boastful lyrics such as “getting money man” and “I told my story, I made a fortune”. He does refer to his upcoming and how he made it to this point of success. We see many rappers refer to their past, through story telling. He is able to switch back and use his native league throughout the song which I found very cool. He does not forget where he came from, and I get the feeling of gratefulness for his newfound success. Cassper Nyovest has impressed me through his ability to make a song, and I think it would do well even in the U.S. because his music crosses boundaries.
