Bomb$hell Grenade

The Zambian artist I will be discussing in today’s entry is Bomb$hell Grenade. Her real name is Bwalya Sophie Chibesakunda and she was born on December 31, 1987. She is from Lusaka, Zambia. She also goes by just BombShell and is a rapper, singer, entrepreneur, and actress. Her uncles can be credited for introducing her to hip hop at an early age and at the age of 11 she would rap and sing along to the music she heard. By the age of 12, she started writing her music. After the release of the song titled “The Berg” featuring Jay Rox is when she first started to receive public recognition. In 2021 she won the All Africa Music Awards for Best Female Rapper in Africa. In 2020 she released the song titled “Fukunyuka” and an official music video.

After watching and listening to the song for the first time I enjoyed it. The lyrics and beat would make anyone want to start dancing after listening to it. Throughout the video, the audience can see that Bombshell is a confident independent woman who embraces her femininity. She’s showcasing the car she owns and jewelry. The braggadocio in the lyrics is of her talking about material things she bought and of her showcasing her talent. Bombshell is embracing her sexuality throughout the song and embracing her culture throughout the lyrics and wardrobe in the video. A verse in the song Bombshell is ridiculing men who try to approach her and how her sex appeal makes men weak. The over-sexualization of female hip-hop artists in Africa is such a big discussion in the music industry and is interesting to learn about people’s opinions on the topic. Overall, BombShell Grenade is a talented artist who uses her femininity and sexuality to her advantage.
