I came across the song “Zany dia tsy hay” by Malagasy rap artist Raboussa while researching artists from Madagascar and I love this video and song. The video feels very homegrown and rooted. It features the artist Raboussa walking through what I assume to be his neighborhood and as he continues to walk he gathers more and more people behind him creating somewhat of a crusade. The video includes clips of the beautiful town in its raw element, children are walking around and playing on the dirt and in rubble, and people are selling things on the streets and simply living their lives. I translated the lyrics as closely as I could and the song is essentially a call to action, he says “ You need to be strong enough not to run away/Are you going to eat rice or wait for side dishes?”. I believe in this song, he is essentially saying that we need to not watch life from the sidelines, if we see a problem we need to get up and try to fix it and we can’t wait for something to be handed to us and just take what we get. I really enjoyed this video and this song as a whole!
