Gigi Lamayne

Gigi Lamayne is an artist who is never shy about her vulnerability, and “BLEED MAMA” is the epitome of raw emotion. It’s a song that feels like it is stuck between being a prayer and a sigh. While the heart of the track is gold, the execution makes me feel unsure.

If we were rating this on storytelling alone, it’s impeccable. Gigi pours out her exhaustion, talking about “grinding non-stop” and the desire to numb the pain. The lyrics show how hard it is to be successful and the guilt that can come with it. Directing this piece to her “mama” creates a more personal and intimate feel, addressing the one person to whom we can be our most vulnerable.

Despite the in depth story, the sound of the song is where it loses me. The tempo is really slow. Usually, slow songs can be really good, but this one feels like it is struggling to find its pace. The vocal delivery and the backing track feel disconnected; the lyrics seem to be fighting the beat rather than flowing with it.

The beat is simple. It has a hazy feel with these slow 808s that do not match up perfectly with the lyrics. However, because the beat is so simple, it makes the lyrics stand out more. On one hand, it makes the song feel more intimate. On the other hand, the timing still feels a bit off. While this specific rhythmic style is popular, it has never been my personal preference.

Ultimately, “BLEED MAMA” is for a specific mood. I would listen to it during a late-night drive or chilling in your room. Gigi’s storytelling remains sharp and infectious, and I deeply respect her fearlessness in showing her vulnerable side, even if the rhythms didn’t quite land for me.
