This week, we take a look at up and coming artist, AJ Bahboy, hailing from Douala, Cameroon.

Born in Bamenda, Cameroon by the name Ajong Frank-Donvan Ekeh, up-and-coming artist AJ Bahboy has made it a goal to take the Cameroonian rap scene by storm. In 2022, he began his pursuit of rap by dropping freestyles with the help of his brother, King Darius. Since then, he has been working to gain exposure and hustling to make his rap career take off. For AJ Bahboy, his career has begun to take off but this is only the beginning.

After winning an open verse challenge in 2023, he was featured on Cameroonian artist Cleo Grae’s song “JONGLEUR”, which helped him gain traction as an artist. With this video and song, he was able to secure a record deal with Sa Majesté Music and Standard Enterprise and drop his first official song titled “Real Life” on December 22, 2023.

Upon first listening, I would say that this artist has a lot of talent. Immediately, I recognize the afrobeats and hip hop feel, with there being a slight RnB influence as well. His first song in my opinion is very vibey, and I feel like we could see a lot of solid work from AJ Bahboy in the future. One thing I am hoping for, however, is that he makes a more distinguishable sound for himself. I say this because although this song is good, it sounds a bit generic. Some of the biggest artists we see today all have a very specific sound that is unique to them. Something that he can make his signature would be amazing for his career and amass an even larger audience for him. Of course, this will all take time as he develops himself as an artist, and there is all the time in the world. That being said, I am very excited to see what else AJ Bahboy has in store for us in the future, and how his artistry evolves as well.
