A Valentine’s bop: single – deezy x detergente

Deezy is a Portuguese-Angola rapper that has been making his mark within Angola’s rap scene since his hit song Stay Strong, where he lyrically takes us on a journey through finding strength within his vulnerability, something that is not usually explored with African men in rap. His authenticity gained him a following, which pushed him to releasing more and more music.

This past Valentine’s Day, he released Single which was produced by DETERGENTE. Detergente is best known for his Top Chart Production with Deezy and Bishop entitled Nós 2. This song, Single,  leans into modern US neo-soul rap, but adds more traditional Angolan instruments— the variety of instruments and heartbeat tempo give the new song a chilled vibe that is inviting too all, perfect for its Valentine’s Day release. This song is already in the Top 10 Trends in Angola, thanks to small Angolan tiktokers.

It’s music video has over 150k views on youtube, and continues to grow. The video clearly depicts the images Deezy paints with his rhymes. He is a man who is surrounded by love, but rejects it because it hurts a lot less if you just stay “single”. For foreign listeners, an english translation of the song shall be listed below.

["Single" lyrics]

[Intro]
I’m sick, I’m sick
I'm sick

[Verse 1]
I've been feeling love in the air, in the air
But on my part, nah; there is not, there is not
They say I have no heart 'cause I go hard
I prefer not to surrender, not to hurt
I prefer to fill my chest and scream out loud
Fuck it, I'm single, yeah
Tchillin 'with every single, bae
Just to raise the ego, yeah
My brother asks if there isn’t a
That makes me forget the rest of the class
That makes me want to feel again and that I love the shirt
'Till the end, like Buruntuma
He says he can’t have a “ride or die”
If she feels that you don't “ride and die” for her
And then with time it's easier to find it
Parading with another guy through these alleys
And when you scare, they're all gone
You're done Mr. Lonely, like Akon's song
So I better have one
Already taken, like the Trey Songs song (Or not?)
 Primis Player Placeholder

[Chorus]
I want to find someone who suits me
(Yeah)
And try to say that love is beautiful
Netflix and chill every Sunday
(TxoBoy)
Yeah, I'm sick of being single
Life has already brought me almost all kinds (of women)
But almost none remained
They say I'm no longer old enough to be a bandit
Hm, that's why I'm sick of being single

[Verse 2]
So I'll try, that's what I have left
Like I'm tired of hearing that man sucks
Like I'm sick of hearing
(Which is always the same song)
It just changes the orchestra
Tchi, it seems that this time I will ignore the danger signal
But they say that when you put the woman on a pedestal
Get inspired by Beyoncé and win big ego
But they also say that behind a great man
There is always a great woman (Is that so?)
So I can't have any
If I can kiss on the mouth, submit my quota
And say, "Girl behaves"
So I go in faith, let's get it
So if you're with it, then I'm with it
I want someone to give me this spirit
And make me say, "Yeah, we did it"
Someone who really, really wanna ’go with me
'Cause I'm sick of being single

[Chorus]
I want to find someone who suits me
And try to say that love is beautiful
Netflix and chill every Sunday
Yeah, I'm sick of being single
Life has already brought me almost every type (of a woman)
But almost none remained
They say I'm no longer old enough to be a bandit
Hm, that's why I'm sick of being single

[Other]
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I’m sick, I’m sick
I’m sick, I’m sick

Single by Deezy

This song is doing so well due to its slow beat, making it perfect for a kickback, tiktoks, and simply just vibing out. In comparison to US artists, Deezy’s Single sounds similar to Masego or even NAO. If these US neo-soul rap artists peak your interest, so will this song.
