The South African hip-hop scene has always been a powerhouse of lyricism and vulnerability, and Nasty C continues to lead that trend. His track, “Trouble,” produced by Lekaa Beats and featured on the 2024 album Confuse The Enemy (Reloaded), is a showcase of his work. The song is raw and has a great narrative behind it.

The central theme of “Trouble,” is the suffocating pressure of success. Nasty C uses the track to tell about his personal life, detailing the sensation of being trapped while balancing his fame with family expectations and relationships. He cleverly uses the metaphor, “diamond under pressure,” to suggest that while stress has caused depression, it also created his great work.

One of the most moving parts in the song is the reflection on mortality and religion. He prays not just for his own safety, but for the fallen rappers who came before him. This addition demonstrates that he’s not just rapping for fame, but because he knows his voice might be the only thing a struggling listener can relate to.

Nasty C’s verse is particularly effective because of his ‘controversial’ flow. He doesn’t rely on yelling and shouting to get his point across, like other rappers tend to do. Instead, his calm delivery makes the lyrics about depression and isolation feel more intimate, as if he is speaking to the listeners that understand his struggle. In contrast, ODUMODUBLVCK provides a grounded perspective that balances the song’s more melodic elements, allowing the track to remain more upbeat.

Production-wise, Lekaa Beats creates a great background. The song opens with a rhythmic shaker and a guitar strum that allows for a reflective tone before the snare kicks in. It’s a beat that allows you to vibe, while being able to understand the lyrics. The inclusion of the shaker connects to traditional African music while still keeping that modern hip-hop vibe.

Overall, the combination of Nasty C’s and ODUMODUBLVCK’s emceeing in “Trouble,” harmonizes nicely to tell a story of resilience.
