Social Impacts of “7elwa Menak”
Wegz’s song “7elwa Menak” حلوة منك was released on September 6, 2023, and took Egypt by storm. With over 3.2 million subscribers on YouTube and over 2.2 million views of “7elwa Menak” within 5 months, Wegz’s impact on his fans and listeners is immense. Additionally, he has been the most streamed artist on Spotify in Egypt since 2020
The song’s title, “7elwa Menak,” directly translates to “beautiful from you.” While several released songs talk about beauty, Wegz does it differently. Based on the lyrics and music video of the song, it is clear that “beautiful from you” symbolizes individuality and the resilience it takes to not only become successful but gain societal respect.
Hip Hop, rap, and other non-cultural art forms are still taboo in Egypt. Thus, rappers like Wegz have received too much backlash and too little support from Egyptian society. The stigmas that often follow rappers and their songs are very prevalent within Egypt, as it is assumed that all rap songs include profanity, which is considered “haram” or against Islamic Sharia law. This raises several questions regarding societal oppression in Egypt, and artists like Wegz make art to break this stigma and inspire everyone to be proud of their individuality.
Within his lyrics, Wegz raps about how he could no longer suppress his true self and had to express the way he felt and his potential through rapping and creating music. He adds how he was limited by his surroundings and upbringing, which is an indication of identity suppression as he clearly was not able to express himself or do the things in which makes him “Wegz”. One of the most impressive parts of “7elwa Menak” is the metaphors within it, like comparing playing musical chords to wounds and injuries.
In a verse translated into English:
“You will see us, your children will heal you.
Don’t stop at the vile thing.
Dangerous fluctuations Seeing by insight, not by sight Daddy in the whole way
The son of the market sells more Who’ll stop me?”
It is clear that he is acknowledging the trauma of growing up in an oppressive society, and through art, expression, and tolerance, the younger generation will be able to “heal” the hate and deter stigmas. With as big of a following as he has, Wegz has the potential to inspire millions of people to continue to combat societal oppression and hopefully make this world a better place.
