Who Go Pay was released on June 7, 2024, by Nigerian rapper Falz with a feature by Adekunle Gold. Accompanied by a high-energy, community-centered, and cash-raining music video which debuted with his ep Before The Feast (2024), Falz’s Who Go Pay lyrically paints a picture of obtaining wealth, maintaining wealth, and using it wisely. Produced by Chillz and vocally performed by the rappers, Falz and Adekunle Gold ride the afro fusion hip hop beat, which embodies their Nigerian culture values through their use of Nigerian Pidgin, Yoruba, and English. As the track opens with drums, synthesizers, and shakers, Falz opens with:
“Sh’ awon boys yen ti quantify
Elo lo wan be? Couple milli, must be nice (it must be nice oh!)
Awon ti e lo Dubai Won lo Yankee, Shebi private yen le fly”
which sets the tone for the song’s idea of a luxurious lifestyle, filled with wealth and the power that comes with it. In an attempt to interpret as a listener, I think Falz continues to explain how some may fault their wealth while others choose to fly under the radar, but at the end of the day, you can either keep it or lose it through irresponsibility. You can use it up and then pray to your God to bring it back, you can get angry about losing it, but you have to think, plan, and prepare yourself the right way when you have it. Or else, you’ll end up with nothing. Then, who is going to pay or “Ta ni o san.”
As the song continues, Adekunle Gold melodically comes into the track spitting about his wealth and his woman, then continues to warn those who attempt to live that luxurious lifestyle with the usage of drugs and alcohol, in what seems to be a warning, as an interpretation. Then Falz comes back to the track to continue his message.
Structurally, I think this song is solid when it comes to the artist’s flow and cadence. If I were to give this song a rating, I would give it an 8.5/10. It’s high energy instrumental, and the artist’s character and charisma shine through, which allows me to appreciate their artistry. I look forward to diving into their discographies. – Diandra Blake
