Teddy Afro, hailed as the voice of Ethiopia’s generation, released a poignant single, “Na’et,” which served as a sharp critique of the current political landscape under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Released on June 21, 2022, amidst a backdrop of social unrest and political turmoil, the song captures the essence of public discontent and addresses the priorities of the government in the face of crisis.
In his song “Na’et”, Teddy Afro condems the Prime Minister’s response to the massacre of approximately 600 Amharas in the Gimbi district of the West Wollega zone, Oromia region. Instead of attending to the mourning families and addressing the underlying issues, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s decision to prioritize his green legacy tree planting annual campaign angered the populations.

Teddy Afro’s lyrics vividly depict the stark reality of a leader seemingly indifferent to the suffering of his people:
“One who is blinded by ethnic lines and forgot the oath he took
Nourishes the lawn over myriad dead bodies”
These lines encapsulate the disconnect between political rhetoric and ground realities, highlighting the hypocrisy of focusing on superficial projects while lives are lost.

Through “Na’et,” Teddy Afro articulates the frustration and disillusionment felt by many Ethiopians regarding the government’s lack of responsiveness to pressing issues. In a country where music has historically been a vehicle for social and political commentary, “Na’et” emerged as a powerful expression of dissent and resistance. Teddy Afro’s lyrics resonate with a sense of urgency, urging listeners to confront uncomfortable truths and demand accountability from those in power.
In essence, “Na’et” stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to inspire change and provoke thought. As Ethiopia navigates through tumultuous times, Teddy Afro’s voice remains a beacon of hope, reminding us of the importance of holding our leaders accountable and striving for a better tomorrow.
