Caroline Moore, also known as MC Caro, is a Liberian songwriter and rapper born in Monrovia, Liberia in 1996. She began her rap career relatively unpopular, with little recognition from the larger Liberian community. She received a lot of negativity as a result of stereotyping, and her work was mostly underground because of this. It wasn’t until 2018 that MC Caro received recognition from the Liberian music industry after her freestyle “Pro Poor” went viral.
Following her debut into the world of Liberian rap, Caroline took a stance on Liberia’s issue of corruption through the release of her song “Bring Back Our Moni” in 2018. She referenced the hundred million dollars worth of material in two shipping containers that were lost. The song went viral, as it moved countless Liberians and united them against a pressing national issue. She remains committed to speaking out on ongoing social and political issues, including the lack of opportunity present for Liberian youth. Having come from an oppressive background herself, she continues to use rap to expose Liberian corruption and call attention to the change that must be made.
In 2020, MC Caro won the 2020 MTN Liberia Music Award for Female Artist of the Year. At the Liberian Music Awards, she chose to wear a suit with African traditional fabrics woven into it, demonstrating her commitment to her culture and her dedication to sending a message.
Some of MC Caro’s other singles include “I na talking to you,” “For D Bae,” “Listen,” and “Cinderella.” Her recent single, “Baby,” from her 2023 album My Way, blends Afrobeats and rap, highlighting her rise to the top of the Liberian hip hop charts. She calls out her critics, emphasizing her resilience and emanating her power. She remains intent on maintaining an image of the Liberian community and togetherness, as seen in the song’s official visualizer. MC Caro’s ability to connect with her listeners and address pressing issues in Liberian society defines her as a representative of the modern African hip hop industry and its goals.
