
With the release of Kampala Boy in 2021, hip hop fans are eagerly awaiting what Flex D’Paper is preparing for 2024. Flex D’Paper, better known as Alex Julius Kwesigabo, is a Ugandan native born in Kampala on January 19, 1994. Influences for the 34-year-old artist include Jay-Z, Nas, and BIG. Although his main genre is hip hop, the rapper also works in Trap music.
Teamwork has been a hallmark of the rapper’s career. Starting in high school, Flex D’Paper got friends together to form a rap group. Named, Rapaholix, the group put out a mixtape in 2012 that ended up being received fairly well by music listeners and disk jockeys in Uganda. Several singles from the album received positive critical reviews and did well in Uganda station charts.
In 2014, Flex D’Paper teamed up with nearly a dozen Ugandan artists to put together the first Ugandan Cypher, an expo-like event. This experience was critical to Flex D’Paper because it provided a networking opportunity with other artists. In 2015 the U.S. Embassy put on similar events that complemented Flex D’Paper’s collaborations with other artists of the time. Following this Flex D’Paper worked with peers on collaborations. These artists included Sheila Wya and Kemishan.
2017 brought Flex D’Paper’s first solo mixtape released titled Not for Sale. The title obviously brought a sense of the artist seeking independence and the songs included did well with critics and listeners. The first official album, Kampala Boy released in 2021 made Uganda’s #4 spot on Apple iTunes upon release. The album also was heavily decorated by the award show season that year.
Flex D’Paper also has a clothing line titled “Rapaholix” which he created in tandem with his high school friends back in 2012. The line has provided a source of income to the artists and is repped by several figures in Uganda.
