By: Victoria Odegbami

Falz, professionally known as Folarin Falana is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter, and actor. He began his career while in secondary school after forming a group called the School Boys in 2009. He started getting well-known when he dropped a song titled “Marry Me” with Yemi Aldade and Poe. As of right now he currently owns an Independent record label called Bahd Guys Records.

Falz represents Nigeria by his music. He easily blends elements of Nigerian music genres like hip hop and afrobeats creating a sound that resonates with both international and local audiences. It mirrors the cultural diversity and how vibrant Nigeria is. Through his lyrics, Falz addresses the political and social issues in Nigeria. For example, he called out the hypocrisy of the Nigerian government when it comes to the lgbq+ community. He confidently critiques the corruption, social norms, and inequality using his social station to advocate for positive change in Nigeria. He also embraces Nigerian slang, like pidgin English, and cultural performances in his music video. With no hesitation, he prides celebrating his country to the world. Falz is a positive role model to Nigerian future change-makers as well. He encourages them to express themselves and by advocating for themselves as well.

For people who are not connected to their Nigerian culture, Falz music serves as a connection for them, allowing them to puzzle back their roots and heritage, they may have lost or not have gotten. While Falz’s music is rooted in the Nigerian experiences, it’s still universal so other black people can connect to it as well. They may resonate with people of the Diaspora who may face similar challenges in their own communities. Falz also collaborated with other artists from different countries creating music that represents the Diaspora.

In his song, Yakubu with Vector, he uses his blend of humor and commentary to address the issues in Nigeria. He references Yakubu Gowon, former military head of state of Nigeria to represent the corruption that goes on in Nigeria. Falz represents hip hop in Africa by portraying African culture, addressing social issues, and also increasing the influence of international people. He is an affluent figure in the African hip-hop community, inspiring fans and other artists with his realness.
