Exploring Sierra Leone Hip-Hop: Kao Denero’s ‘Green Gold’

An analysis of Sierra Leone Hip-hop music

“Green gold” featuring Runtown (2024) is a hip-hop song by Sierra Leone music artist, Kao Denero. The song talks about the legalization of “green gold”, AKA cannabis. The song mentions medicinal benefits, as well as possible financial gain. Weed is a very popular topic among the hip-hip genre and is oftentimes brought up in songs. Whether that is just mentioning personal use or defending the use of it in public, many hip-hop artists mention it in their lyrics.

Denero’s use of his platform to bring awareness to a topic he finds important reflects a huge part of hip-hop culture. Music has always been used as a tool to protest, spread awareness, bring something to the public eye, and demand change. Regardless of what the topic is, it is important for music artists to keep doing this. Denero’s use of multiple positive uses for “green gold” alias the listener to support his stance easily.

The beat used allows for an easy listen. It is upbeat and light, reflecting the positive aspects he is rapping about. Using positive sounding music behind lyrics that call for change is a great technique to promote more listening and therefore spread the topic one is talking about. The flow of lyrics create a great vibe so regardless if a listener is focusing on lyrics, beat, or flow, all can enjoy this song.

The voices of the Nigerian artist Runtown mix well with Denero’s. It doesn’t feel like they are fighting for the best verse, but instead working together to create a cohesive song. The production of this song was done with thoughtfulness and intentionality. Given that he stays on this track and produces more well-made songs, Kao will continue to have success in his music career. I look forward to listening to more of his music and supporting.
