Africa is the future of hip-hop. It’s 54 African nations. Not only are they spitting like crazy, but they’re also braiding languages. Hip-hop is going to like 3.0 when you talk about Africa. Hip-hop is there. So that’s the sustaining power if you want to pay attention to it. – Chuck D

Gigi LaMayne

Gigi LaMayne is an interesting artist. This is the first time I have heard of her and she really stuck out to me with all her awards she earned so far in her career. However, before I mention her awards, I learned interesting facts about Gigi LaMayne. First off, it is the fact that her real name is Genesis Gabriella Tina Manney. Just like many rappers in today’s time, they decide to change their name as a marketing scheme and I would assume to make their names more “cool.” Overall, I thought it was an interesting move for her to change her name. Another interesting fact that I found from an article called “GIGI LAMAYNE BIO 2015” was that Gigi LaMayne was born on July 7, 1994. This makes her to be around 19 right now. So when she won her awards, she was about 16-17 years old, WOW. For being young, she has demonstrated her gifts as an artist and has been rewarded for it. In a different article called “Interview with South African FEMCEE Gigi Lamayne”, Gigi states that she went to a school in Johannesburg called the Dominican Convent. Also at the age of nine years old, she found a passion for poetry. However, as she got older she began to narrow her love for poetry into rap. At a young age, Gigi had a passion for poetry and her lyrics reflect that. She demonstrates powerful metaphors and clever insults. She truly has a talent for rapping. As far as awards, Gigi has many. According to the article “Gigi LaMayne No Weapons Formed Against Me Will Prosper”, Gigi won multiple awards in 2013 and 2014. In 2013 at the South African Hip Hop Awards, she won “Best Female”, “Best Newcomer”, and “Best Mixtape” award. In 2014 she earned the “Best Female” award. To think around this time she was about 16-17 years old. That is an amazing accomplishment for her especially at such a young age. She has amazing talent and her music demonstrates that.

Music

Gigi LaMayne has an interesting flow to her music. She has more of a modern feel to it, more than what I expected to be honest. I expected more of a J. Cole type of flow or Kendrick Lamar. However, listening to her music, her voice really brings out the character of her rhymes. I was able to listen to the Ice Cream remix featuring her and Khuli Chana. In the song, Gigi LaMayne raps “I’m a female Pac in my suit, in a lunch in.” I felt this line was pretty powerful, especially since she brought up arguably one of the greatest rapper Tupac Shakur. To refer to herself as an female version of Tupac, it takes a lot of charisma because not a lot of rappers today will do that. I was also able to catch Gigi’s “Nun-Nu Age Freestyle.” I thought this song was very important because I believe if you are able to drop rhymes on the spot at any given moment, you are truly an hip hop artist. I grew listening to Tupac, Biggie, Run DMC, and many more artist who would drop rhymes on the regular. So to hear that she has the same ability to drop rhymes at any given moment, really proves to me her skills. In her freestyle the line I liked the most that she said was “I dropped the fruit of knowledge and sent Adam back to school.” I thought that was very clever of her of incorporating both ideas. Another line that I really like from Gigi LaMayne was “blood clogs couldn’t stop this flow.” WOW, this is the first time I have ever heard of Gigi LaMayne and she already has my attention. She has what many hip hop enthusiast say “she got bars.” She has the ability to come up with clever rhymes and metaphors that not many rappers are able too. Gigi LaMayne has skills and I am going to continue to follow her.
