In an upbeat and fun song about getting over an ex, Ray Blk pays homage to the diaspora.
Rita Ekwere, stage name Ray Blk, was born August 2, 1994, in Nigeria and moved to London around the age of 4. Ever since a young age Ray has always been inclined to make music. At the age of 13, Ray created a music group with her friend MNEK called “New Found Content.” She received an English degree from Brunel University and wrote her dissertation on post-colonial Nigerian literature by famous Nigerian authors Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie.
While studying for her English degree, Ray Blk released her first EP called Havisham, a song that mirrored the story “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens. In the song, Ray tells the story of a girls who turns against men after witnessing the women in her life have their fair share of heartbreak. In order to keep the rights to her music, Ray hesitated to sign to any particular label and released her music on her own, including the debut of her mini album Durt which featured collaborations from many artists some being, Stormzy, Wretch 32, and SG Lewis. In her song My Hood, Ray talks about her childhood home and how she faced many hardships while being there.
In her song Over You, Ray Blk, talks about a past relationship and getting over it. In the song, Ray uses dancehall dancers and African drumming that represent the diaspora. She’s seen along with the dancers dancing and whining to the music in an attempt to “get over her ex” as she’s saying in the song. The song is amazing and a great upbeat song to be played at parties. I totally recommend anyone to listen to Ray Blk’s album “Access Denied” as it’s an amazing album
