Kwaito – Beginnings

South African Hip Hop in the early 1980s in Cape Flats just 10 years after Hip Hop evolved in the United States. Rebellious youth used Hip Hop is express their pain, anger, and hope in regards to the apartheid. Recently, Kwaito has almost become the new South African Hip Hop. However, Kwaito is considered a subgenre of Hip Hop. It was started in Johnannesburg in the late 1990s. Kwaito differs in how the lyrics are delivered. Kwaito lyrics are yelled and blabbered. Kwaito, the word, means strict or angry. However, recently it has a new slang meaning of cool.
