The Origins of South African Hip Hop

South African hip hop music began in the 1980s. It is deeply connected to the apartheid and political oppression during that time. Some of the first groups were Prophets of the City, Black Noise, and Brasse Vannie Kaap. The music was used to rebel against the apartheid and polices of racial segregation.
