Kwaito is a new South African hip hop for the youth. It is a mixture of hip hop, reggae, R& B, and more. It expresses not only expresses the oppression and corruption they go through but also their political views, style, talk, and dance.
Kwaito started during the election of Nelson Mandela and by the 1990s became very popular. Many of the youth view Kwaito as a way of contributing and bring about change and better opportunities in their country.
However, some people feel that Kwaito music is changing. There is more over sexed lyrics and less “political energy.”
